Images of Grace put spotlight on philanthropy

It was an evening of philanthropy and glamour, as more than 270 revelers converged on the Palladium St. Louis for the fourth Images of Grace fundraising gala. Images of Grace is a biennial fundraiser for Grace Hill Health Centers and Grace Hill Settlement House.

The Nov. 12 event was Grace Hill’s premier fundraising event, generating over $140,000 in revenue. It showcased the photographic works of eight Grace Hill families, who captured St. Louis life in still photography that was sold in an auction at the event.

Over the past six months, the amateur photographers fanned out through the community to capture a glimpse of the world through the lens of a camera. They took photos of St. Louis landmarks, nature, families, animals, special occasions, and every day events.  Throughout the process, photographers were introduced to professionals and instructors through a series of workshops that helped them learn technical skills and learn the art of photography.

During the gala, many patrons bid on more than 60 photographic pieces at the behest of auctioneer Fletcher Lane. Guests danced the night away to the sounds of Boogie Chyld.

Laura Kozak, vice president of development, said the gala’s success hinged on a dedicated staff and the overwhelming generosity of Grace Hill supporters and the event co-chairs

“I want to personally thank Cindy Teasdale Mcgowan and Bill McGowan, Kerith and Frank Thurman, Jr., Patricia Whitaker and Dick Miles for their tremendous support,” she said. “We are also extremely grateful for the enthusiastic support we received from our other partners and contributors. Through their generosity and participation they continue to demonstrate the vital importance of Grace Hill to the community.”

Initially, more than 8,000 photos were taken. That number was reduced to 60 through a thorough review and selection process by the Images of Grace Photography Committee. Renowned photographer Michael Eastman selected, edited and printed the live auction photos.  Washington University in St. Louis photography students edited the fifty silent auction photos.  “Images of Grace encouraged our photographers to look at their communities in a new light and with a fresh perspective,” offered Barbara Kasten, Grace Hill Settlement House Director of PR and Marketing, who worked alongside the families and organized the workshops.. “The gala offers our supporters a chance to connect with members of the community in a new way, while at the same time help us help families in need.”
